Calafate takes its name from an abundant thorny shrub found in the southernmost area of Argentina’s Patagonia. Initially, the Tehuelche Indians lived in Calafate taking refuge in the leafy forests and subsisted through the cold winters by using this bush as firewood. According to an old Tehuelche proverb, ‘He who tastes calafate, shall return’. The village developed as a sheltering-place for wool-traders and when in 1938, the surrounding Southern Continental Ice-fields became the Glaciers National Park; it grew slowly and is nowadays a popular tourist destination.
The Balcony of Calafate, at the top of Mount Huiliche, offers the most spectacular views of the area, including Lake Argentino, the Santa Cruz River, the Perito Moreno Glacier and Mount Chaltén. Driving on 4WD off-road vehicles, we will climb Mount Huiliche and explore its surroundings. At 1,050 meters / 3,444 ft above sea level, the vehicles will reach the first panoramic point, providing a view of the village of Calafate and the main body of Lake Argentino. On a clear day, it is possible to sight the peaks of Mount Chaltén and Mount Torre. We may look for fossils and small pieces of petrified wood in the area, and learn about these vestiges. As we continue on uphill, we will reach the Labyrinth of Stones, an 85 million year old Cretaceous formation of rock and sandstone.
We border the bay and leave the town of Calafate along the vast turquoise Lake Argentino westbound towards the Andes mountains, scenery of open steppes where we may sight herds of wild llama-like guanacos, lesser rheas, pink flamingos in the misty lagoons and perhaps, condors soaring in the sky. We pass by huge sheep ranches and by the foothills of Mount Frias as we enter the Glacier National Park. Winding through forested hills we will suddenly be awed as we reach the Curve of Sighs, with the sight of the Perito Moreno Glacier ahead of us, descending like a long white tongue through distant mountains, and abruptly ending in a translucent blue wall.
Mini –trekking over the Glacier (a 1-hour walk, easy but not for the fainthearted): We will take a short boat-ride across the Rico fjord of Lake Argentino, navigating among iridescent icebergs and sighting the towering ice walls of the Glacier. Be awed by enormous ice slabs calving off the 200-foot-high, 3-mile-wide Moreno Glacier, and falling ice-blocks with thunderous noise into the lake. We hike across lenga (Antarctic beech) forests with amazing views of the glacier to the point when we leave terra firma, where guides will give us a short briefing, and we will get equipped with crampons attached to our shoe soles. Wondering at the astounding view of the immense plateau of ice, we will start a fascinating walk, sighting crevices, caves and underwater rivers of myriad blue hues.
A viewing area, wrapped around the point of the Peninsula de Magallanes, provides a spectacular sight of the front wall of the Perito Moreno Glacier, looking across the Iceberg Channel onto its overwhelming dimension and the imposing Andean Mountains as backdrop. The catwalks are formed by seven balconies of different height and distance from the glacier connected by stepped footpaths. While wandering around these balconies, eventually we can observe from different perspectives the detachment of immense ice blocks from a short distance, hear the roaring sound they produce when crashing the water, and observe how they turn into shimmering floating icebergs, nature’s number one ice show!
Early in the morning you will be transferred to Puerto Bandera, on the northern fjord of Lake Argentino, from where we will navigate to the Upsala Glacier crossing the Iceberg Channel. Upsala Glacier forms a 50 km. long, 10 km. wide and several hundred meters thick ice strip. In its central part you will observe a dark sector, the central moraine, where rocks, sand and clay transported by minor glaciers tributaries of the Upsala are deposited. This glacier of an intense white colour reaches the line of the horizon.
